Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker Paranormal Investigation - Case Study

Long tunnel at Kelvedon Hatch

On Friday 7th November 2025, KASE Paranormal carried out a two-team investigation at Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker in Essex. Working across the bunker's three underground levels from early evening through to 5am, we documented activity across uniformed services areas, telecoms rooms, medical bays, dormitories, and connecting corridors to answer a simple question: is Kelvedon Hatch haunted, and if so, what kind of activity is taking place?

This case study gives a clear, non-sensational overview of how we approached the night, what methods we used, and the most interesting results from our time at Kelvedon Hatch.

Quick Case Overview

Location: Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker, Essex

Type of site: Cold War-era nuclear bunker built in the 1950s, designed to house up to 600 military and civilian personnel in the event of nuclear war. Now a museum and event venue.

Date: Friday 7th November 2025

Time: 5:30 PM - 5:00 AM

Teams on site:

  • Team A: Dan, Darren, Laura, Sam, Lucy

  • Team B: Graham, Alan, Lisa

Aim of the investigation:

To carry out a structured, two-team investigation across multiple levels of the bunker, logging timestamps and comparing overlap between teams to identify any repeatable patterns of auditory, visual, physical, or communicative activity.

Most active areas (based on what repeated, correlated, or produced the clearest responses):

  • Lower levels - uniformed services and telecoms areas

  • Top floor - medical bay, dormitories, and connecting corridors

  • Middle floor - during joint team sessions

Key findings:

  • A potential EVP captured on a locked-off camera with no investigators present on the recorded floor.

  • Physical sensations experienced by multiple team members, some leaving visible marks including what appeared to be puncture-style marks.

  • Shadow figures and light anomalies observed independently by multiple witnesses in separate locations.

  • Intelligent responses received via communication devices, including names (Annie, Ralph, Harold, Sally, Elizabeth, Gabrielle) and contextual phrases (I am Seven).

  • Cat ball displacement - one ball moved approximately 8 feet between rooms with no team member present to witness the movement.

  • Coordinated visual phenomena - two team members independently describing the same child figure with matching details (dark blonde curly hair, dark eyes, red bow).

This was a full, structured paranormal investigation at Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker; KASE Paranormal does not offer public ghost tours.

About Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker

Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker is a Cold War-era underground complex in Essex, originally built in the 1950s as part of Britain's nuclear defence network. Designed to accommodate up to 600 military and civilian personnel during a nuclear attack, the bunker extends over three levels deep underground and includes operations rooms, communications centres, medical facilities, dormitories, and life support systems.

Now open to the public as a museum, the bunker retains much of its original equipment and atmosphere. Its deep underground construction creates a unique investigative environment - stable temperatures, minimal external noise contamination, and enclosed spaces that can produce unusual acoustics and airflow patterns. These factors make careful documentation and cross-team comparison essential when distinguishing between environmental effects and potentially unexplained activity.

How We Ran The Investigation

To cover the bunker's multiple levels without overcrowding any one area, we split into two teams and worked separate sections, regrouping later for a joint session on the middle floor.

Across the night we focused on:

  • Lower levels - uniformed services areas and telecoms rooms

  • Top floor - medical bay, dormitories, sick bay, and canteen areas

  • Middle floor - joint investigation with combined teams

Equipment used

We used a mix of environmental and interaction-based tools:

  • Spirit box and investigative apps

  • Cat balls

  • Temperature monitoring equipment

  • Ouija board

  • Static (locked-off) cameras

  • Handheld cameras

  • Voice recorders

Documentation

  • Both teams logged activity with approximate times and locations, allowing cross-referencing of events across different floors.

  • Static cameras were left running during periods when areas were unoccupied.

  • Dan and Laura conducted an initial walkaround of the lower levels early in the evening to establish baseline conditions.

Conditions On The Night

Understanding the conditions helps rule out normal causes before anything is classed as unexplained.

Weather and environment

  • Weather: Overcast throughout the evening with damp conditions typical of early November.

  • Temperature: Cool conditions externally, with temperatures dropping overnight.

  • Wind: Light winds; no significant gusts noted.

  • Humidity: High, consistent with seasonal conditions.

  • Moon phase: Waning Gibbous (high illumination with cloud cover).

Internal bunker conditions

  • As a deep underground structure, the bunker maintained a generally cool and stable internal temperature.

  • Localised temperature drops were recorded during periods of reported activity.

  • Minimal noise contamination - occasional distant ambient sounds typical of a large underground structure were noted, but no sustained external noise sources identified.

Possible sources of contamination

  • Sound transfer between floors - though cross-checked and found to be minimal from the positions used

  • Echoes and acoustics within enclosed underground spaces

  • Temperature fluctuations in deep underground environments

  • Psychological effects of prolonged time in enclosed, low-light spaces

We noted all of these factors during the night so we could filter out what was likely environmental before focusing on anything that remained unexplained.

Key Activity By Area

Initial Walkaround

Dan and Laura conducted an initial walkaround of the lower levels early in the evening to establish baseline conditions and to allow Laura to assess the location while it was quiet.

  • During this period, both investigators independently heard what sounded like an electronic female voice within the lower telecoms room. No obvious source was identified at the time.

Lower Levels – Uniformed Services and Telecoms (Team A)

As the evening progressed, Team A focused much of their investigation on the lower uniformed services area, where activity quickly began to build.

Key moments logged by Team A:

  • 20:47: During a question-and-answer session, the question "What's your name?" was asked. An immediate response of "Annie" was received via a communication device. At the same time, Lucy reported hearing a distinct knock within the room.

  • Shortly after: Sam experienced a sudden fuzzy sensation in his leg, which lasted briefly before fading.

  • 20:58: The team heard thudding sounds above and within the room. This was cross-checked with Team B, who confirmed they were positioned on the top floor and that normal sound transfer between floors was not audible from this location.

  • 20:59: A device stated "I am Seven", coinciding with a noticeable temperature drop.

  • 21:16: Temperature in the room fell by approximately 2°C, dropping from 15°C to 13°C.

  • 21:26: Four clear footsteps were heard by Lucy and Laura within the room.

Corridor and plant room activity (21:26–21:46):

  • Dan felt drawn out into the corridor towards the plant room, describing a strong sense of heaviness in that area.

  • Laura, Lucy, and Dan all reported tingling sensations.

  • Dan began calling out the names Ray and Ralph (names previously associated with responses earlier in the investigation). In response, two distinct "woah" vocalisations were heard.

  • Later in the session, the name Ralph appeared on a device.

  • The sensation of heaviness appeared to move around the area, persisting even after doors were opened.

  • The name Gabrielle appeared simultaneously on two separate devices.

Later lower level activity:

  • 21:57: All team members present heard a clear whistle.

  • Moments later: Dan observed a light through the doorway, followed shortly by Laura seeing an orange light at a slightly lower height, appearing seconds later – suggesting possible movement.

  • 21:58: A loud growl was heard directly in front of Darren, just outside the doorway, immediately after Dan asked Darren to shine a torch to debunk the light. The sound was loud enough to be heard clearly by all present. Almost simultaneously, a cat ball activated – notably just as Dan commented that none had gone off up to that point.

Top Floor – Medical and Dormitories (Team A)

Key moments logged:

  • 23:45: The name Harold was received, followed by a cat ball activating twice in the corridor between the medical room and dormitory.

  • Midnight: Laura heard what sounded like a male voice or scream coming from the corridor between the dormitories and the medical bay.

Ouija session (00:16):

  • The board initially indicated S, R, Q, followed by Yes.

  • The session then appeared to respond humorously to a joke made by team members, slowly spelling out "Beans", "Spaghetti", and "Tesco".

  • When asked the price of beans in the dormitory, the response was 65p, while the visible label stated 69p.

  • Shortly after, a device responded with something similar to "I am lying" or "I'm joking."

Cat ball displacement (00:58):

  • A cat ball was discovered to have moved approximately 8 feet from the dormitory into the medical room.

  • It was switched on, and no team member recalled seeing or hearing it activate during movement.

Later activity:

  • Multiple whimpering sounds and movement were heard.

  • Sam and Dan both reported hearing what sounded like a child's giggle, raising the question of whether this could be connected to the earlier response of "I am Seven."

Top Floor (Team B)

While Team A were focused elsewhere, Team B recorded activity on the top floor.

Key moments logged by Team B:

  • 21:50 (sick bay walkway): Sounds resembling running were heard, along with a tap noted by Alan.

  • 22:00 (near sick bay): A sound resembling a man shouting or speaking was heard. The area was checked immediately, and nobody was present. Notably, this was in the same area where Laura heard a similar sound.

  • 22:23 (canteen hallway): A cat ball activated without any visible cause.

Middle Floor – Joint Investigation (Teams A and B)

Before a scheduled break, both teams regrouped on the middle floor and formed a circle to build energy.

Physical sensations during circle session:

  • Dan experienced a sharp jab-like sensation to the back of his neck, followed by itching. Later in the night, a visible mark resembling a puncture was noted.

  • Lucy experienced the same sensation on her hand, also leaving a visible mark.

  • Laura later reported a similar sensation on the top of her head.

Visual phenomena:

  • Darren reported seeing a black entity step away from the circle and into a small room, describing it as unpleasant in appearance.

  • Graham independently reported seeing a shimmer to the left of a doorway, followed by a black figure appearing to the right of the doorframe, noting what appeared to be a curved horn shape on its head.

Child presence:

  • Laura picked up on the presence of a lady with curly hair, whom she felt was family, standing behind Graham.

  • Laura also sensed a young girl, describing her clothing including a bow.

  • Dan independently sensed a face and hair matching Laura's description – dark blonde curly hair, dark eyes, and a red bow.

  • Laura described the child as stroking her hair and appearing somewhat aware of the group.

  • Dan received the name Sally, while a device responded with Elizabeth.

Post-break activity:

  • Graham observed a shadow figure on the opposite side of the room after cameras were repositioned toward the mail room.

  • Laura then saw ambient light being blocked out, moving from left to right in the same area.

  • Sam felt what seemed like a touch or breath on his neck.

  • Multiple team members reported prickly sensations, cold spots, and fluctuating temperatures.

Evidence Review – EVP

During post-investigation review, a potential EVP was identified on audio captured by a locked-off camera positioned on the middle floor.

  • At the time the audio was captured, no investigators were present on the middle floor. Team A were located on the top floor, and Team B were positioned on the lower level.

  • The audio consists of a brief, isolated sound with vocal characteristics.

  • It does not coincide with visible movement or speech, and no team member recalls speaking at the time.

  • While environmental factors such as sound travel within the bunker were considered, no clear source was identified.

The clip remains unexplained at this stage and has been documented for reference and further review.

Evidence Highlights

From the whole night, several pieces of evidence stand out:

  • Potential EVP: Vocal anomaly captured on locked-off camera with no investigators present on the recorded floor.

  • Physical sensations: Multiple team members experiencing touches, tingling, and sharp sensations, some leaving visible marks.

  • Visual phenomena: Shadow figures and light anomalies observed by multiple witnesses independently.

  • Intelligent responses: Names and contextual responses received via devices and Ouija board.

  • Object movement: Cat ball displacement of approximately 8 feet and repeated activations.

  • Coordinated perceptions: Two investigators independently describing the same child figure with matching physical details.

Where possible, the team tried to replicate or explain these events through normal means. What remained was recorded as unexplained, rather than labelled as proof.

Our Interpretation Of The Activity At Kelvedon Hatch

Taking the night as a whole, Kelvedon Hatch presented a complex mix of possible intelligent interaction and broader environmental phenomena.

Indicators of intelligent-style interaction:

  • Direct, contextual responses via communication devices – names appearing on request ("Annie" when asking for a name), and the playful Ouija session responding to jokes with "Beans", "Spaghetti", "Tesco" before acknowledging "I am lying."

  • Request-based responses – cat balls activating during sessions, temperature drops coinciding with claimed presence.

  • Multiple names received across the night (Annie, Seven, Ralph, Harold, Sally, Elizabeth, Gabrielle), with some appearing on multiple devices simultaneously.

  • The potential EVP captured when no investigators were present on the recorded floor.

Residual or environmental patterns:

  • Footsteps, thuds, and movement sounds occurring in areas with no visible source.

  • Temperature fluctuations in specific zones.

  • Recurring sounds in particular locations (whistles, knocks, vocalisations).

Physical phenomena:

The physical sensations experienced by multiple team members – including marks that appeared after reported jab-like feelings – are notable. While we cannot claim these are definitively paranormal, they occurred independently across different individuals during the same session.

At the same time, the environment matters. As a deep underground structure, Kelvedon Hatch presents unique acoustic properties and stable but occasionally fluctuating temperatures. Our approach is to keep what we cannot confirm in the "unexplained" category, and look for repeatability over time rather than forcing a conclusion from a single night.

So, is Kelvedon Hatch haunted?

We cannot claim to have every answer, but this investigation produced a wide range of activity across multiple levels – auditory, visual, physical, and communicative – with some events occurring simultaneously in separate areas and being witnessed independently by different team members. The volume and variety of activity experienced during this investigation warrants further study.

What This Means For Future Investigations And Events

For teams returning to Kelvedon Hatch, the main takeaways from this investigation are:

  • The lower uniformed services and telecoms areas produced the earliest and most sustained activity, particularly between 20:47 and 22:00.

  • The top floor medical bay and dormitory areas showed activity later in the night, including the unexplained cat ball displacement.

  • Joint team sessions on the middle floor produced multiple independent visual observations and physical sensations.

  • Cross-team timestamp logging and position confirmation was valuable for ruling out sound transfer between floors.

  • Static cameras positioned in unoccupied areas can capture potential evidence (as with the EVP) that might otherwise be missed.

For future visits, we would recommend:

  • Running dedicated observation periods in the lower telecoms room, where the initial electronic female voice was heard.

  • Positioning static recording equipment on floors where no investigators are present, as this produced our most significant audio evidence.

  • Continuing research around the names obtained during communication attempts, particularly "Annie" and the possible child presence ("Seven", "Sally", "Elizabeth").

  • Using small groups with clear questioning during trigger sessions to keep responses time-locked and easier to review.

  • Documenting any physical sensations immediately and photographing any visible marks that appear.

Due to the volume and variety of activity experienced during this investigation, KASE Paranormal will be returning to Kelvedon Hatch in late 2026 to further document, review, and attempt to establish consistency in the reported phenomena.
