The road and the story

Blue Bell Hill is the section of the A229 crossing the North Downs between Maidstone and Medway. The modern legend is commonly linked with a fatal collision in November 1965 involving three young women.

Published apparition accounts circulated by the late 1960s. The present source check does not support older wording claiming that a 1967 newspaper report predates the 1965 collision.

Reported encounters

The most common account describes a woman stepping into the path of a vehicle, apparently being struck and then disappearing. In 1974, driver Maurice Goodenough reported to police that he had hit a girl, wrapped her in a blanket and returned with help, only to find the blanket but no person.

Further incidents were reported in 1992. Details vary between tellings, and repetition is not treated as proof, but the story has remained attached to the same stretch of road for decades.
