Dover Castle

Nine centuries of fortification, a Roman lighthouse and extensive wartime tunnels have given Dover Castle one of Kent's deepest layers of recorded history and ghost tradition.

Henry II's great keep dates from the 1180s, while the Roman lighthouse in the grounds was built many centuries earlier.

History

Dover Castle has defended the shortest sea crossing between England and continental Europe for more than nine centuries. Its history reaches back to Roman Dover, and the site remained in military use into the twentieth century.

During the Second World War, tunnels beneath the castle served as a military command centre and hospital. Each historical period has added new spaces and new stories to the site.

Reported activity

The castle's traditions include a headless drummer, figures in historic dress and unexplained sounds in the tunnels. These older stories are presented as folklore rather than as established events.

A more traceable source is Robin Laurence's account of a joint TPPRU and ASSAP investigation in 1991. It records staff and visitor testimony, reports of several apparitions and two overnight vigils in which investigators logged bangs, movement, smells and other incidents. The account shows that reports were collected and investigated; it does not establish their cause.

KASE position

KASE has not investigated Dover Castle. The 1991 investigation account is included because it provides names, dates, methods and logged observations. Older stories about the drummer and military figures remain clearly labelled as castle tradition.
