History

Deal Castle was built in 1539-40 as the largest of Henry VIII's three artillery castles guarding the Downs anchorage. Its low, six-lobed design created concentric gun positions, while later centuries brought alteration, wartime damage and eventual public guardianship.

The Paranormal Database records a 1926 newspaper description of a supposedly hideous female smuggler carrying a lantern after a violent death. Later submissions add soldiers and a young girl, but the underlying newspaper page and the identities of the later witnesses are not exposed. The newspaper trail supports inclusion; the story remains an account, not proof.
