Coldrum Long Barrow

Older than Stonehenge, Coldrum carries recorded traditions of enchantment, an impossible stone count and a prince buried after battle.

National Trust countryside access is currently dawn to dusk. The route is unpaved and the monument sits on uneven ground reached by steps; parking is limited and overnight parking is not permitted.

History

Coldrum Long Barrow was built around 3985-3855 BC as a communal tomb and held remains from more than 22 people. It is Kent's best-preserved Medway megalith and has been cared for by the National Trust since 1926.

Reported activity

Folklore collected in the 20th century associated the site with a battle and a 'Black Prince' burial, and applied the wider Medway-megalith belief that the stones could not be counted successfully. The National Trust also records the disputed derivation of Coldrum as a 'place of enchantment' and the site's continuing ritual use.
