History

Work on the Chatham defences began in 1756 during the Seven Years' War and the site was expanded through later periods, including the Napoleonic era. Fort Amherst now preserves extensive surface defences and tunnels cut into the chalk hillside. The grounds can be visited free of charge, while access to the tunnel network is through the fort's advertised guided tours and events.

Reported activity

Fort Amherst's own ghost tours and KASE's preserved record describe reports including shadows, close voices, crying or wailing sounds, cold areas and military figures in or around the tunnels. These are recurring visitor and investigator accounts attached to specific parts of the site, but the record does not treat repetition alone as proof of their cause.

KASE has investigated Fort Amherst on multiple occasions. Team notes include cold areas, shadow-like movement and possible voice recordings in the tunnels and upper gun level. In the Gatehouse, a loud bang could only be reproduced during the visit by lifting and dropping a decorator's stool.
