History
Rochester Castle has stood over the River Medway since the late 11th century. The great stone keep, built in 1127, is one of the best preserved in England. The castle endured a brutal siege in 1215 when King John's forces undermined the south tower, and a second siege in 1264 during the Barons' War.
Reported activity
The best-known local story is a white-lady figure associated in later tradition with Lady Blanche de Warenne and the 1264 siege. Versions differ over whether she fell, jumped or was struck, so the directory does not present any one version as historical fact. ASSAP also publishes a Rochester Castle vigil account that records the legend and the investigators' observations. A separate tradition places a Charles Dickens-like figure in the grounds.
KASE perspective
KASE has not formally investigated Rochester Castle. The dated ASSAP vigil gives the record a traceable investigation source, while the Lady Blanche and Dickens identities remain folklore layered onto a real medieval site. Check Medway Council's current opening information before visiting the keep; the steep steps and historic interior limit accessibility.
Visiting responsibly
Ticketed castle keep managed by Medway Council; castle gardens are publicly accessible. Check the venue or landowner's current information before travelling, respect closures and private property, and never enter unsafe or restricted areas.
