Fort Horsted

The brick-lined tunnels beneath Fort Horsted are the focus of many of the stories attached to this vast nineteenth-century fort outside Chatham.

Built between 1880 and 1889 to protect Chatham Dockyard, Fort Horsted is the largest of the five land forts constructed around the Medway towns.

History

Fort Horsted was built between 1880 and 1889 as part of the land defences protecting HM Dockyard Chatham. Convict labour from the newly constructed Borstal prison was used during the works. The finished fort has a distinctive six-sided, arrowhead plan and an extensive network of underground passages.

Designed for a garrison of around 400, the fort later served during both World Wars. Its construction was also marked by tragedy: in March 1889, a tunnel collapse trapped a working party of six convicts.

Reported activity

Accounts connected with Fort Horsted often centre on its underground passages. Visitors have described figures in the tunnels, footsteps without an obvious source and a heavy or unsettling atmosphere below ground.

People attending paranormal events have also reported apparently responsive equipment. These are personal experiences and recorded claims; they are not presented as proof that the site is haunted.

KASE at Fort Horsted

KASE has investigated Fort Horsted on several occasions. During one visit, two investigators reported seeing a full figure moving across the grounds in daylight. The team has also recorded repeated equipment responses and unusual experiences in particular areas across more than one visit.

Fort Horsted is a private venue. Do not enter the site without permission, and follow the venue's current instructions during any authorised visit or event. Underground spaces can include low light, uneven surfaces and restricted areas.
