History

Recent research published by Hever Castle dates the present medieval defensive castle to 1383. It became the Boleyn family home and the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, later passed to Anne of Cleves, and was extensively restored and expanded by William Waldorf Astor in the early 20th century.

Reported activity

Folklore places an apparition identified as Anne Boleyn on a bridge at Christmas and links a spectral coach-and-horses story with her father, Thomas Boleyn. Similar Anne Boleyn traditions are attached to several places around England, so the story is treated as a travelling historical legend rather than site-specific evidence.
