Knole

Knole preserves protective marks cut into the house during the Gunpowder Plot period, while an oral-history recording keeps a separate estate ghost story in its proper context.

Knole's house, tower and courtyards are ticketed, while pedestrian access to parts of the park follows separate rules. Pre-booking is essential at busy times. The Gatehouse Tower has a steep spiral stair and most showrooms are upstairs; the wild deer must not be approached. Ordinary admission is not investigation permission.

History

Knole began as a late medieval archbishop's house and became a royal residence before passing to the Sackville family. Its long sequence of courtyards, showrooms and service buildings was substantially remodelled in the early seventeenth century and now sits within Kent's last medieval deer park.

Reported activity

National Trust research dates apotropaic or 'witch' marks in the Upper King's Room to early 1606, when craftsmen were preparing rooms for a planned royal visit after the Gunpowder Plot. They are physical evidence of beliefs about protection, not evidence of a ghost. A Knole oral-history interview also preserves a family's story of footsteps and a cloaked apparition at a cottage on the estate. That account is not relocated to the main house here.
