Penshurst Place

Penshurst's older Sir Philip Sidney and grey-lady traditions are joined by a specific 2017 visitor account from the Tapestry Room.

Penshurst Place is a privately owned, ticketed visitor attraction with seasonal opening. Tickets are sold at the visitor entrance. Historic steps, floors and routes affect access, and the surrounding estate is not unrestricted land. Check current opening and access information before travelling; a visitor ticket does not allow an investigation.

Place: Penshurst, Kent
Area: West Kent and the Weald
Type: Medieval fortified house and gardens
Source record: Documented reports
Visitor access: Public or ticketed access

History

The core of Penshurst Place was built for Sir John de Pulteney in 1341 and fortified later in the fourteenth century. The Crown granted it to the Sidney family in 1552, and successive medieval, Tudor, Georgian and Victorian work produced the house and gardens seen today.

Reported activity

The Paranormal Database records traditions that Sir Philip Sidney and a grey lady haunt the house and garden. It also preserves a 2017 visitor submission describing a cold, weighty, body-like sensation across the witness's back in the Tapestry Room; the submission says a nearby guide reported seeing the grey lady more than once. The archive does not name either person or expose an original interview, so the specific account is documented but not independently verified.

KASE perspective

KASE has not investigated Penshurst Place. The 2017 account is retained as an attributed report, not presented as fact, and the older figures are treated as house traditions. Any controlled work would require the owner's prior permission.
