The garden is steep and includes uneven ground; access inside parts of the Old Castle is limited and special tours are separately advertised. Do not enter closed masonry, the moat or non-public estate land.
Place: Lamberhurst, Kent
Area: West Kent and the Weald
Type: Moated medieval castle ruins
Source record: Folklore and oral history
Visitor access: Public or ticketed access
History
The moated Old Castle was begun around 1377-80 and later adapted into a Tudor and seventeenth-century manor house. In the nineteenth century much of it was deliberately presented as a Picturesque ruin below the new mansion, leaving one inhabited wing, walls and archaeological remains across three islands.
Reported activity
A Kent folklore archive records a revenue officer supposedly killed by Arthur Darrell and said to emerge dripping from the moat to seek revenge. A linked legend has Darrell's ghost interrupting his own funeral. The archive labels the material as a historical record but gives no named witness or original publication, so it is presented as a castle tradition rather than a verified encounter.
KASE perspective
KASE has not investigated Scotney. The record is narrowed to Old Scotney Castle because that is the place named by the story; it does not imply that the Victorian mansion or whole estate shares the same tradition.
