Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre

A long-running tradition describes Roman soldiers marching from the former port landscape and disappearing towards the old shoreline.

History

Richborough marks a principal Roman entry point into Britain, beginning with the invasion bridgehead of AD 43 and continuing through a major port town, monumental arch and late Roman shore fort. Occupation lasted into the early fifth century, and the amphitheatre survives as a separate part of the complex.

Reported activity

The Paranormal Database records stories of Roman soldiers remaining on duty, including several hundred figures said to march towards the sea and vanish. The site's shoreline has changed dramatically since the Roman period, which helps explain the story's direction but does not verify an apparition. No individual witness or original publication is exposed by the archive.
