Westgate Towers

A published account describes a council worker hearing a body-like dragging sound and running footsteps after becoming locked inside the tower.

The museum and viewpoint sell tickets on site and publish seasonal hours. Access is by five flights of narrow stairs and the rooftop can be slippery when wet; there is no wheelchair access to the tower. Check the venue before travelling.

History

Westgate was rebuilt around 1380 and is England's largest surviving medieval city gateway. It later served as Canterbury's gaol and opened as a museum in 1906; the towers now contain displays and a rooftop viewpoint.

Reported activity

Psychic News and a Kent paranormal archive reproduce a story in which a council worker, preparing to leave, heard a body-like dragging sound and several people running above him while the temperature fell. The account says lone work after dark was then stopped, but that policy has not been verified directly with Canterbury City Council. A separate tradition places an apparition near the old iron bridge.

KASE perspective

KASE has not investigated Westgate Towers. The story is specific enough to retain as a documented report, but the claimed council response must remain attributed to the published accounts rather than stated as confirmed council policy. Museum admission does not provide investigation access.
