Shell Grotto

The Grotto itself preserves the Blue Lady tradition, a 1930s painting and a record of a 1939 séance in the Altar Room.

History

Discovered in the 1830s and open to paying visitors since 1838, the Grade I listed Grotto contains millions of shells arranged across curving chalk passages. Its maker, date and purpose remain uncertain, despite many competing theories.

Reported activity

The official Grotto tour names a resident ghost called the Blue Lady and says the original 1930s painting is displayed in the museum room. It also records a séance held in the Altar Room in 1939. These artefacts establish a genuine tradition attached to the site, but they do not establish the age, identity or reality of an apparition.
