Sissinghurst Castle Garden

History

The surviving Tudor range and tower are remnants of a much larger sixteenth-century house on an older moated site. After periods as a prison and poorhouse, Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson bought Sissinghurst in 1930 and created the influential garden that passed to the National Trust in 1967.

Reported activity

The Paranormal Database records a tradition that a peaceful priest, said to have been killed by Sir John Baker, walks beside visitors in the garden; it also notes an apparition reported on a castle staircase. The archive describes the source only as published media and does not identify the publication or a named witness, so these are retained as folklore, not a confirmed case.
