History

The Goodwin Sands form a long, shifting sandbank in the English Channel off Sandwich Bay. Trinity House marks the hazard with navigational aids, and the official Goodwin Sands Marine Conservation Zone covers 277 square kilometres around the banks. The directory map uses that official conservation boundary and clearly labels it as broader than the exposed sands.

Reported activity

Stories of phantom vessels are part of the area's maritime folklore. The best-known is the Lady Lovibond, said in later retellings to return every fifty years after a wreck in 1748. The repeating-date story lacks a reliable contemporary source and no confirmed apparition was recorded in 1998, so it is presented as legend rather than a documented supernatural event.
