Ightham Mote

A Grey Lady and a walled-up skeleton feature in later stories, but the National Trust's current history does not substantiate those details as established fact.

History

The National Trust dates the core of Ightham Mote to the 1340s. The moated house developed through careful additions in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries and was home to the Selby family for almost 300 years. Its documented history is substantial, but the current National Trust account does not present the walled-up skeleton or Gunpowder Plot warning stories as settled fact.

Reported activity

Later ghost literature links a Grey Lady, cold spots and a supposed skeleton found behind panelling in a tower room. Those stories remain part of the site's popular tradition, but the accessible official history does not corroborate the identity, circumstances or claimed connection with Dame Dorothy Selby. They are therefore presented as reported folklore, not physical evidence.

KASE perspective

KASE has not investigated Ightham Mote. The record remains classed as documented reports because the traditions have been repeatedly published, but the new copy separates that publication history from verified building history. National Trust visitor rules take priority.
