History
Historic England lists Ramhurst Manor House as a Grade II* private house, with a 16th-century or earlier timber frame and major external work dated 1716. A printed 1875 account by Alfred Russel Wallace identifies the house near Leigh while retelling alleged events said to have occurred there in 1857.
Reported activity
Wallace's account says members of the household heard knocking, footsteps and voices that they could not explain. A visiting woman described as accustomed to seeing apparitions reportedly saw an elderly couple in old-fashioned dress by daylight. The narrative was written nearly two decades after the alleged events and was presented in support of spiritualism, so it is a historical source for the story, not independent proof of its cause.
